Jason Anker MBE

Jason was paralysed from the waist down due to an avoidable incident on a construction site in 1993 when he fell off a ladder. He was 24 years old.

The story of his life before the incident, the day of the incident, the time spent in hospital and rehab, his initial release from hospital and his struggle with life over the last 25 years is an honest and sometimes graphic account of the devastation the incident has had on Jason and his family & friends.

For many years he was unable to talk openly about his experience of a work related major incident. This is reflected in a story that is very raw; the emotion with which he delivers his talk is as strong as if it was the day of the incident.

His unique story has a powerful impact and grabs the attention of those listening, from Directors, Managers, Supervisors and Operatives alike. He is willing to talk openly about all of his experiences, the physical and psychological effects of a major incident including:

• His personal life
• The effect on his family and friends
• The cost of an incident – financial, physical & emotional
• His abuse of alcohol and drugs
• His struggle to get compensation
• His commitment to make a difference

Jason's story is really about being at rock bottom, having the determination to pick yourself up, change direction in life and then trying to make a difference to others. Jason is a regular speaker at functions and after dinner events where he talks about his story, from the evening before the accident, the accident itself, the subsequent rehabilitation and his attempts to put his shattered life back together.

Professor Tim Marsh

Prof Tim Marsh, was one of the team leaders of the original UK research into behavioural safety (in construction) in the early 1990s. Tim is one of only a few Chartered Psychologists who are also Chartered Fellows of IOSH. He has previously been a visiting lecturer at Manchester University and Loughborough University and as a visiting professor at Plymouth University, he is considered a world authority on the subject of behavioural safety, safety leadership and organisational culture.

Tim was awarded a “President’s Commendation” in 2008 by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management and was selected to be their first ever ‘Specialist Fellow’ in 2010.

Tim is an experienced key note speaker, having presented to organisations throughout the UK, Dubai, South Africa, Malaysia, USA and India. These organisations include:

The Faculty of Medicine
The inaugural Campbell Institute ‘thought leaders’ conference
Safeguard New Zealand
European Conference Board

Tim has also chaired numerous conferences on Behavioural Safety in the UK and founded Europe’s largest behavioural safety event from 1997 until 2012..

He has worked with more than 400 major organisations around the world, including Apple, the European Space Agency, the World Health Organisation and the United Nations.

Tim was an expert witness at the “Safety Culture” and “Management of Change” expert forums at the Cullen Inquiry into the Ladbroke Grove incident.

Tim created the award winning Affective Safety Management concept for the IIRSM. His book of the same name is now one of Europe’s best ever selling safety books – as is the second of Tim’s books Talking Safety. A recent third, book Total Safety Culture has also been well received.

Tim regularly writes articles for magazines such as the Safety and Health Practitioner (SHP), Health and Safety at Work, Safety Management, Construction Safety, Safety International, The Ergonomist, Exposure (BOHS) India Safe and Safeguard (New Zealand).

He has worked with media such as the BBC, and has written and produced many safety training videos such as Crash Course, Drive Smarter and the extensive Safety Leadership series.

Tim has more recently taken park in webinars such as Rebranding Safety and Lone Worker Safety Live and has contributed to international online conferences.

Sean Toon

Sean speaks alongside Jason's "5 Second" presentation about the impact Jason's accident has had on him, his family and friends.

This provides a powerful and effective angle on Jason's story in the live presentations and provides unexpected impact, as well as highlighting how many people are actually affected by workplace accidents.

Reaching the Brink
This is a health and wellbeing talk where Sean discusses how he bottled up problems in his personal life from a childhood trauma. In his early twenties a series of events nearly took him to the brink, he found a way of coping and it's only in recent years he has found a way to deal with problems head on which has helped him and his family. When this happened to Sean there was no one to speak up to and it is now Sean's goal to encourage people to speak up and listen.

Mike Farmer

Mike has been running his own design and marketing business for over 25 years. Prior to that he worked for several UK advertising agencies and worked 'client-side' for a while as a marketing manager.

He has also worked as a business mentor and is a distance learning tutor for the Cambridge Marketing College and a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM).

He writes business and marketing courses for colleges around the UK covering a wide range of topics including digital marketing, personal development, entrepreneurship and business administration. He is also a director of a small charity working in East Africa.

Clare Davey MSc

Clare is a behavioural psychologist with over 10 years’ experience in behaviour change. She has headed up the behaviour change department within an international business, managing a small team of behavioural psychologists who specialise in applying psychology to workplace situations in order to drive improvements. This includes working with people to understand why we do the things we do, and through this understanding, manage our own behaviours and thinking.

Clare holds an MSc in Behaviour Change from Derby University, she achieved this as a mature student studying part time. Clare also won the 2018 Association for Business Psychology award for Excellence in Performance Improvement, beating off competition from other national and international contenders.

In her spare time, Clare enjoys reading, travelling and socialising with friends and family.

Karen Royle

Karen is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist who has spent many years providing workplace coaching, training and assessments to help people enhance their potential in the workplace. She has delivered training in both the private and public sector and coaching interventions with front line staff, line managers and senior directors.

Clients include:
Astra Zeneca, BT, Ernst and Young, Lloyds Bank, Manchester Airport, O2, Price Waterhouse, Sainsbury’ as well as many hospital trusts.

As well as basic group training, through coaching and employment based cognitive assessments, Karen supports people to determine modifications and strategies that will enhance vocational potential and workplace skills, to enable people to be ‘the best’ at what they do.

Karen’s more specialist work has been focused on helping people with various health conditions to manage their condition in the workplace. This has ranged from people with mild stress and mental health concerns to those with more extreme head injuries, stroke and long-term conditions.

Karen has presented on these topics on a number of occasions at the national Health & Well-Being at Work conference. She has also conducted workshops for the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL), and the National School of Occupational Health, on coaching for better health at work.

Karen works as an Independent Consultant and Associate to various case management, cognitive assessment, training and coaching focused companies and has worked on various contracts with the Department of Work and Pensions. She also undertakes vocational assessments for insurance and medico-legal work.

Karen is HCPC registered, an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and co-convenor of the Division of Occupational Psychology Health and Well-Being Group.

Tony Roscoe MSc

Tony is a behavioural psychologist specialising in behavioural change (including safety, health / wellbeing and quality), cultural change and business improvement (including Lean and Scrum).Tony has experience in a wide range of industries, including: Utilities, Oil & Gas, Ship Building Defence, Quarrying & Aggregates and Manufacturing. Tony applies strong interpersonal skills to provide in depth support at all levels within a company from front line to board level.

In his spare time he competes in powerlifting and holds the ABPU British record in deadlift and the AWPC world record in “Full Power” which is all three lifts in the same day.

Abbi Taylor

Abbi is Jason’s daughter and his PA and has now taken over his position at Proud2bSafe as Managing Director to help Jason
